I think that drill and practice, remediation, and traditional tutorial programs have a relevance in classroom of today. They should not be the main source of teaching, but used as tools when needed. I think drill and practice is the best way to learn basic addition and subtracting facts 0-9, as well as multiplication facts. Remediation is also great for students who function at a lower than average level because of certain behavioral problems/disorders. Most of my students fall in this category. Online tutorials are greatly appreciated in my classroom. Having the same information presented in a way different from the way that I teach it, works well with a lot of my students. We use a program called Compass Odyssey in my district and it has been very successful.
Behaviorist learning theory and instructional technology are ways of giving immediate feedback to students . This is great for students, especially when they have set academic and behavioral goals for themselves.

  1. Shonda,

My school just updated our Compass Odyssey program. The students are in the process of taking the MAP testing part that will help to identify an individual path for curriculum on this program. The students get to work on Compass atleast once a week during our 45 min. computer special. In addition, each of the teachers have 3 computers in their classrooms that we use with the students. We can have them work on Compass Odyssey during our reading and math workshop time as well. I was on the committee who researched Compass Odyssey and a couple of other programs before purchasing it and I was very impressed with the ease, age appropriate and the functionability of this program. It is very user friendly and engages the students by using age appropriate graphics and sound, as well as helping them to learn. The students in my class love working on computers. Sometimes, once the teacher has explained a new concept, backing it up with a computer tutorial is even more effective. Are you seeing progress and success with your students using Compass Odyssey?

  2. Sounds like a great program. The problem that my district has is a lack of resources. Very few classrooms have more than 1 computer in them and you have to sign up for the labs 17 years in advance. My department has proposed Government as an online course for next year. I have some major reservations as I feel that Government is a course that needs a great deal of drill and practice when dealing with the amendments and court cases. I like the concept of online learning, I am just skeptical that our students will get all of the information that they need and retain the content that is being taught. Thoughts?

  3. I also think that it really helps when information is presented in a new way. I taught an entire lesson on comparing numbers using the greater than, less than, an equal to symbols. Several of my students were still confusing the direction of the greater and less than symbols. I showed them a short video on brainpopjr and they haven't had a problem since. This short video was very motivating and met the needs of my visual learners.

  4. Yes Compass Odyssey and other tutorial programs are great ways to present information to students after the teacher has introduce it. My students love Compass Odyssey, and I really love that they get immediate feedback from the program.
