Cognitive Learning Theory

Dr Orey in "Cognitive Learning Theories" explains how important it is to use multiple sensory components when teaching. It is important because like all people, students learn better when they are able to use a variety of their five senses. He also explained how the brain connects with previous information, and that we never really forget information, we just have to have a method or process to get to it. That is why we need to let our kids experience things, and have many connections to a piece of information. I also like what Dr. Orey said about using word processing information programs as table making charts. Students have the opportunity to fill in the table with pictures, key words, and web resources to help them remember information. I can really see how that would be beneficial to a visual child, in which most students are. I think this strategy with get students very involved since they would be the creators.

  1. You pointed out several things that I found interesting. I think Dr. Orey's explanation about using multiple sensory components very informative. I feel it is important for teachers to remember that each student uses their different sensory components and in different ways. We need to make sure our lessons take this into account so they we are giving each student an opportunity to learn in the best way that works for them. Along with that, I also agreed with the fact that we should let students experience as much as possible so that they can continue to build those connections to piece the informatio together.

  2. Shonda,
I also feel that the use of charts and graphic organizers can help a child learn more effectively (especially if they are a visual learner). I also think it is important to get the children involved in any way possible and it also helps the brain remember the information better by causing multiple memory connections.

  3. My school purchased a "cognitive mapping" program about 5 years ago that taught the children about 6 different maps for specific purposes. Although we don't really place much emphasis on using ALL the maps anymore, there are about 3 that I have my students use on a regular basis. It is neat to see how much they retain just by using something so simple!

  4. Shonda,
My school purchased Kidspiration which is a concept mapping software program that our students use. It has really proven to be effective for our students that have very limited experiences and background knowledge. I enjoy having access to this program and was glad to have had some experience with these for this week’s assignment.
I agree with you that these types of strategies would get students more involved in the lesson because they would be the creators. I have found that students get really excited when given the opportunity to use concept mapping in the classroom. I think this is because it is something that isn't used often and is also visually pleasing to the students.
